It is our pleasure to announce a new initiative of Italians in DC for 2012: ParoLab.

ParoLab is a book club born with the intent to offer the Italians who live in Washington a window on the contemporary Italian literary scene. We will read good books, we will gather to discuss them and share views, and we will organize meetings with the authors.

The first event within the framework of this initiative will take place at the Italian Embassy, in collaboration with the Italian Cultural Institute. Author Maurizio Molinari, correspondent of the Italian newspaper La Stampa in New York, will present his book The Italians of New York. Other panelists include: Anna Lawton, in charge of ParoLab; Guido Olimpio, correspondent of the newspaper Corriere della Sera, as moderator; four-star general retired Peter Pace, former Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff at the White House, and one of the Italians of New York described in the book; and Gherardo Guarducci, owner of the West Village restaurant Sant Ambroeus. 

This event will take place on February 21, and will be an open event for the general public. RSVP is required through the Italian Cultural Institute website: www.iicwashington.esteri.it

ParoLab meetings for members only will take place once a months. The location will be announced before the meeting, and would move from a private house to a bookstore room, to a library space. Discussions will be informal. The objective is to enjoy time together to discover and appreciate the latest literary products of Italian culture. Nothing more than a good book can reveal the mind-set, trends and tastes of a society.

We are also planning to organize a second group for the discussion of books in English translation, in order to include those who love Italian culture but are not sufficiently fluent in Italian.
